The “Zona Norte” of Costa Rica, to be referred to as the Northern Territory, is part of the San Juan River Watershed and shares a border with the country of Nicaragua. During the past few decades, small-scall farming has been replaced with large scale agri-businesses. Many displaced farmers have lost their land and large scale farming of pineapple, orange and sugar cane have had major environmental impacts. In order to remedy this, a territorial development approach has been implemented to focus on local and small scale development that is appropriate for the area.
